From 'A History iof Scarborough', page 64

Many English immigrants also came to Scarborough during this second period of settlement, amongst whom was JOHN WALTON. Born in Cumberland, England, he came with his parents to Canada as a youth of nineteen in 1818, and in York he turned his knowledge of mining to good account by sinking wells. In 1823 he purchased for one dollar an acre two farm lots on the western border of Scarborough at the present Sheppard Avenue and Victoria Park Avenue intersection. He married Mary Thomson, third daughter of the first settler in Scarborough; and his enterprising young wife carried her butter and eggs to York market, a distance of ten miles, by a footpath through the woods. For her butter she received fourpence a pound, and the same for her eggs per dozen, taking groceries and other goods in trade. At the end of three years the industrious couple had so prospered that they were able to purchase a mare and a side-saddle on which Mrs. Walton might ride to market. After two years more they were able to buy another horse to make a team, and they ingeniously fashioned a set of harness from strips of basswood bark.
